Orchid Tree

Bauhinia spp. [Cæsalpinioideae]
Origin: Southeast Asia

Often known by their genera name, bauhinia, these lovely tree are appreciated for both their small size and beautiful flowers, which bear a superficial resemblance to orchids, and thus the name.

Bauhinia monandra, also known as pink bauhinia or St. Thomas tree, has pink flowers and produces long, heavy seed pods.

Bauhinia blakeana is the famous Hong Kong orchid tree, with purple flowers up to five inches across.

Orchid trees are seen often in both gardens and civic plantings. Leaves have a symmetric "butterfly" shape.
