Northern Cardinal
Cardinalis cardinalis
Origin: Eastern United States
Most of Hawaii's common non-native birds were deliberately introduced to the islands, and the cardinal is no exception. Between 1929 and 1931, cardinals were released in Hilo on the Big Island, on O`ahu and on Kaua`i. They are now common on all main islands. Males are bright red in color, while females are brown with only a hint of red tint.
